In most transactions in life there are expectations and responsibilities. Short-term insurance is no different. Besides from the responsibility of the policyholder to ensure monthly payments to their insurer there are also other responsibilities that could arise.

Liability and property insurance policies usually require cooperation from the policyholder with the insurer when an incident occurs that leads to a claim. The policyholder has responsibilities that must be met or coverage could be jeopardised.

Should an incident occur the policyholder must inform their insurer within a reasonable time, with as much facts of the incident as possible. Depending on the insurer and the incident, details could vary. Usually insurers require proof and documentation of any loss, whether it is a police statement of the theft or destruction or supporting documentation that might be useful. In the case of third party liability, the immediate forwarding of third party claims or summons is usually required.

The onus is on the policyholder to provide as much information as they can so that their claim can be handled as swiftly as possible. Being honest not only helps the policyholder get the right coverage but it also helps in processing of the claim as fraudulent claims are forfeited.

However, insurers do have the reputation of not playing fair and in a case where the policyholder feels that they fulfilled their responsibilities and still were not satisfactorily served, there is recourse. An appeal can be made, other avenues such as the insurance Ombudsman can be pursued, a civil court case or even public forums where complaints can be made are available. All of these would, however, demand more resources from the policyholder.
